Nadia Sobol has kept the record for eleven years — a court reporter at the edge of the loudest rooms in the county, catching every word and keeping the one thing everyone else will later misremember.

Then, during the worst snowstorm in Pennsylvania history, she is attacked in a courthouse parking deck and survives, missing only the five minutes before she blacked out.

The whole town waits for those minutes to come back. Nadia knows they won't; the part that's gone was never written down. What no one has noticed is that the attack was never about what she saw. It was about what she typed.

Someone has altered the official record of a sworn afternoon, and the only surviving true copy is the tape Nadia made with her own hands — held, for safekeeping, by the woman who taught her the trade.
